The reopening of Checkers in Mimsoa Mall took place on Thursday, 30 November.

Checkers Mimosa Mall reopened bigger and better almost a year after the popular grocery store was consumed by fire. Checkers reopened an upgraded Fresh-X flagship store today where convenience and shopping experience are prioritised.

The store has all the bells and whistles with a sushi bar, coffee shop and wine cellar. Bloemfontein Courant attended the relaunch party where staff revealed a much bigger space to make shopping that much more pleasant. Divisional Manager of Shoprite/Checkers Free State and Northern Cape, Stefan Gouws, stated that customers can expect the best when shopping at one of their Fresh-X stores. “They can expect the best shopping experience in Bloemfontein and the freshest offers you can get. Checkers has decided to focus of freshness because of the ever changing retail environment we believe that the future is fresh,” said Gouws.

Last year, a devastating fire at Mimosa Mall affected retail stores on two floors. Numerous goods were damaged as well as the structure of the building. Centre Manager Neelofar Issa stated that the revamped Checkers is a good addition to the mall. “It has been a tough year for not just us as management but for the tenants as well. You can see that the store is absolutely stunning and it only bodes well for us. We expect it to be very popular,” said Issa.

Shopper Surita Le Roux, expressed her admiration of the upgraded Checkers. “I like the environment and that people can pop in and get breakfast on the go. It is marvellous especially after the tragic fire that happened here, this reopening was excellent,” she said.

Another Shopper Madeleine Van Zyl, said she was delighted for the reopening as the store made her shopping convenient. “This is beautiful and I think every woman like to shop in a space that looks nice. This shop looks great and it has all the products that I need for my house – even the extra delicatessens,” said Van Zyl.

The reopening of the Checkers at Mimosa Mall means that 36 people have become employed. Checkers will also be opening at Preller Walk in December 2018.
