A charge against a Free State farm manager of Middelpunt farm, Kestell district has been changed to murder. The 30-year-old farm manager, Frikkie van Huysteen, briefly appeared in the Kestell magistrate’s court on 24 February 2021. This follows the death of 28-year-old Thokozani Joseph Mdlhuli of Tlhlolong near Kestell.
The incident took place in September 2020 when Van Huysteen and Mdlhuli engaged in a quarrel whilst unloading iron pipes at a farm. Police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, said it is alleged that Mdlhuli took an iron pipe and assaulted Van Huysteen, who then drew his firearm and shot Mdlhuli in the neck at close range.
“The wounded Mdlhuli was rushed to hospital where he was later discharged, though he couldn’t walk. He returned to hospital after his condition had deteriorated and died on 28 January 2021. The charge against the suspect, Van Huysteen, was thereafter changed from attempted murder to murder,” said Makhele.
Van Huysteen was arrested and charged with attempted murder and released on R500 bail. The case has since been postponed to 28 May 2021 for further investigation under the same bail conditions.
