Centlec is appealing to the Mangaung community to ensure that whenever they want to electrify and/or extend connections in their households, they must at all times take serious precautionary measures.
Residents are requested to rather acquire the services of a person or company experienced and certified to work with electricity because non-adherence to safety measures will lead to unfortunate incidents and unnecessary loss of life.
This came after a 10-year-old girl was electrocuted on Monday at Block 1, JB Mafora, in Bloemfontein.
Centlec spokesperson, Lele Mamatu, expressed their sadness after the passing away of the girl.
“According to information received, it is believed that the girl touched a shop’s steel counter which had a live electricity wire connected to it within the garage shop. She was immediately rushed to the hospital and unfortunately could not make it. She has since passed on.”
In a statement, Mamatu said Centlec’s preliminary investigations revealed that the manner in which wiring was done in the (garage) shop, was not in compliance with the acceptable standard of electric wiring and it has seriously caused this unfortunate incident in which a loss of life occurred.
The South African Police Services (SAPS) in Kagisanong is currently investigating the matter to determine the exact cause of the incident.
“We are deeply sorry for this loss of life of this young girl and we believe that all necessary precautionary measures were supposed to be taken when this extension of electricity was done at the shop. Using correct insulation mechanisms at the joint and complying to safety measures would have saved this young girl’s life. We wish to express our sincere condolences to the family of this young, innocent girl whose life was cut short,” explained Mamatu.
He added that the electrical supply to the main erf will stay disconnected until such time correct measures are taken to ensure that electricity is properly wired with the valid Certificate of Compliance (COC) issued and repair of the earth leakage device that is malfunctioning from the main house.
