Centlec disconnects defaulting customers – including government

Local power utility, Centlec, has confirmed that it has begun disconnecting electricity for defaulting customers within the Mangaung supply area. This includes residential customers, businesses, and even government entities.

“In accordance with our approved policies and municipal guidelines, electricity services shall be disconnected for customers with outstanding debts to Centlec,” stated the utility’s spokesperson, Lele Mamatu.

According to Centlec, their response aims to protect the sustainability and efficiency of essential services provided to the community.

“Centlec has made multiple efforts to engage with defaulting customers through its approved Credit Control and Debt Collection Policy,” added Mamatu. “This includes issuing of disconnection notices for overdue accounts.”

Despite the issuance of disconnection notices, a number of accounts remain unpaid, including the bills of government buildings, which negatively impacts Centlec’s ability to deliver electricity.

“While disconnection is not our primary goal, we urge customers to make timely payments to avoid service interruptions,” said the spokesperson. “We emphasise that this measure is not targeted at any specific individuals or groups but is a routine credit control process conducted monthly, as stipulated by our policies.”

He concluded saying: “We appreciate the public’s cooperation and understanding in addressing these matters. Together, we can ensure the continued provision of vital services to our communities.”

Bloemfontein Courant is investigating which entities defaulted. This is a developing story.
