Cause of fire at student facility investigated

Investigations into the cause of the fire that broke out at a student accommodation facility in Welkom are underway.

Local fire brigades confirm they managed to contain the blaze which broke out late Thursday night, reports OFM News.

Whilst the extent of the damage is estimated to be about R1.5 million, the Matjhabeng Local Municipality’s Chief Fire Officer, Lungile Freddy Khuse, confirmed there were no injuries.

He confirms that at first they battled to get the fire under control and worked hand-in-hand with a private fire brigade in the city.

The manager of the private fire brigade, Tines Bruyns, confirmed from the scene which played out in Stateway, that investigations are underway and will soon be followed by mop-up operations.
