Cashier accused of defrauding company of over half a million


A cashier at an abattoir in Harrismith appeared in the Local Magistrate’s Court for fraud, forgery, and uttering. According to Colonel Zweli Mohobeleli, the suspect is free on bail of R2 000.

The suspect Madelein Hugo (44) is accused of stealing her employer’s money and falsifying cash receipts and bank payments seven times in 2019, according to Mohobeleli.

Mohobeleli explained in a statement released that the corporation lost more than R500 000 in money.

“She was apprehended on 12 June 2023, by members of the Free State Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit in Bethlehem, who were acting on an arrest warrant,” said Mohobeleli.

Hugo will be back in the Harrismith Local Magistrate’s Court on 5 September 2023.
