The case against a man arrested in connection with the torching of a clinic in Brandfort in the Free State will be heard in the Local Magistrate’s Court again on August 19.

This, after Petrus Ndabeni Sehlabaka (28) briefly appeared in court yesterday over arson and business burglary charges.

Police spokesperson, Sinah Mpakane, says it is alleged that a computer screen belonging to the clinic was found in his possession as it was positively identified by the staff from the clinic. She says Sehlabaka remains in custody and will apply for bail during his next appearance. He was arrested on Saturday following the torching of the Vaal Rock Clinic in Majwemasweu township. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

The Provincial Health Department has since condemned the incident and confirmed critical medical equipment and patients’ records had been destroyed.
