NEARLY 60-thousand voters are registered to participate in the nine municipal by-elections taking place in selected wards across the country today.
In the Free State, ANC candidate Dineo Semela goes up against Simon Fabatse of the Dikwankwetla Party of South Africa for Ward 20 in Maluthi a Phofung municipality; while Ngwathe municipalitiy’s Ward 13 will be contested by René Hartslief of the ANC and the DA’s Johannes Roos.
There are also two wards up for grabs in Mahikeng in the North West. Ward 13 is uncontested with ANC candidate Kgomotso Seheri standing alone. Ward 15 is contested by ANC candidate Tironyane Makolomakwa and independent candidate Warabile Mokaila.
According to the Independent Electoral Commission the wards are vacant due to either the death or resignation of previous councillors. Voting stations will be open from 7am until 9pm tonight.
