Bus driver, passenger among accused in R3m NC drug bust

A bus driver and a passenger are among the three people set to appear before the Upington Magistrate’s Court tomorrow for allegedly dealing in drugs worth more than R3 million.

The trio was arrested by the Hawks in the Northern Cape on Monday, June 24, after the directorate’s investigative unit stopped and raided the passenger bus they were travelling in, finding drugs worth R3,4 million. Hawks spokesperson, Nomthandazo Mnisi, says the Hawks pulled the passenger bus over outside Upington after receiving information it was being used to transport drugs.

“During a disruptive operation by the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigating Unit, the assortment of drugs that includes dagga, tik (crystal meth) and mandrax tablets were recovered during a search and seizure operation,” says Mnisi.

It is unknown if the trio forms part of a syndicate or not. Mnisi does confirm that there were other passengers on the bus at the time of the raid.
