The community of Thaba Nchu had a unique experience recently when they were invited to come and witness how the Free State Legislature approaches its budgeting processes.
A special Budget Speech that was held last Thursday in the hall of the Sediti High School was attended by many excited residents of Thaba Nchu.
Mamiki Qabathe, Speaker of the Provincial Legislature, highlighted, among others, the special relationship that Legislature has with the Mangaung Metro Municipality.
“We treasure our relationship with the Metro, because the friendship is about learning from each other and helping each other to grow.”
Qabathe told Voice the special Budget Speech was a way of encouraging public participation.
“With the special Budget Speech we practice democracy by letting our communities participate in the tabling of the Provincial Budget. This approach serves to promote social cohesion, economical responsibility and financial accountability, which leads to sound financial administration.”
She added that their visit to Thaba Nchu was also their way of letting the people know that the Free State Legislature is for everyone in the province. “We came here not just to deliver a Budget Speech, but also to hear about the challenges our people are facing on the ground and come up with possible solutions. We arrived here a day before the Budget Speech to hear about the work done by different stakeholders in the community.
“We have also received complaints of poor service delivery from the community. We have heard the people and we will now send a report to the Premier, Ms Sisi Ntombela, so that when we come back, there will be solutions. We need to build a good relationship between the government and the communities,” Qabathe concluded.
