From 22 – 24 February Pacofs will showcase Chilahaebolae, an action-packed musical satire fashioned from the wealth of African fable, at the André Huguenet Theatre from 18:00.
According to Pacofs, the performance is based on Phokobje, Hunguhwe or Mpungushe – a trickster figure that can be recognised from folklore.
“The ethos of Chilahaebolae is to preserve and promote African aesthetic traditions and story-telling idioms. Chilahaebolae interlinks environmentalism, folklore and African language to help us understand contemporary challenges. Water scarcity is a running theme throughout the play.”
Directed by Kgafelaoa Magogodi with the support of a formidable team, the play will bring the characters to life with a fireside setting that will be presented at Pacofs.
“The play has also been staged outdoors, recreating the fireside storytelling practices of our forebears. Sand is used to recreate natural circles and fire smoulders in mbawula made from upcycled objects. The preservation of the environment is woven through the production,” said the Pacofs spokesperson, Maseeta Makgabane.
Tickets are available at the Pacofs booking office from R100 per person.
