Just yesterday, 1 September, marked the four-month progress point of the bridge that is currently being built in the southern part of Bloemfontein.

Bloemfontein Courant previously reported that the bridge is set to connect Vereeniging Drive with Vereeniging Drive Extension as well as a direct connection with Oliver Tambo Road, and is set for completion at the end of May 2022.

Ean Steenkamp, managing director of Raubex, said the progress thus far has been exceptional and they are well ahead of schedule. “This is mostly due to good planning and the efficiency of our teams,” he said.

According to Steenkamp, the bridge is at the phase where they are staging and constructing the deck. He told Bloemfontein Courant that the deck is the final stage of the core structure, however, there are still lots of refining work that needs to be done before it is complete.

“Fortunately we have not had any hiccups with our construction process, however, we were delayed by some community disruptions in June. Regardless of the disruptions, we are still on schedule to complete the project in time,” he explained. “We are also of the opinion that we will be able to open the road for traffic before the contractual completion date of May 2022.”

The project was initially announced by the Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM) on 28 May.

Meanwhile the previous detours identified by MMM are still in place until the completion of the project.
