The ANC’s mayoral candidate, Mxolisi Siyonzana, has just been elected as the new executive mayor of the Bloemfontein-based Mangaung Metro.
OFM News reports, he received 57 votes and edged his rival, the DA’s Hardie Vivier, who received over 20 votes. There were 5 spoiled votes, with 87 votes cast.
This means both ANC candidates on Monday were victorious during the election of a mayor and a speaker. Siyonzana’s election follows shortly after his fellow comrade and the chairperson of the ANC Women’s League in the Free State, Mapaseka Nkoane, was elected as speaker.
Siyonzana was the former speaker and resigned last week after the Free State ANC’s Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) announced him as their mayoral candidate. The announcement, however, did not come without a backlash. Some within the ANC rejected his election and said he offers nothing new. This is a developing story.
