The third leg of the Castle Lite Trail League in Bloemfontein takes place on Saturday morning when anywhere between 250 and 300 runners take to the trail at the Brandkop conservancy.
The increasingly popular league has already attracted some of the biggest names in Free State running this season. The women’s Free State marathon record holder, Paulina Njeya, has been a revelation on the trails and after running just two trails in her life, she already has two victories to her name in the league.
Her fierce rival and friend, Annah Moeketsi, will also be one to watch on Saturday morning after she claimed second at the first leg which was held at Wild Olive Estate in the north of Bloemfontein.
The men’s section is anyone’s for the taking with Wilfred Leeuw winning the first leg, while Chabeli Nyedimane tamed the 10km second leg at Glen Lyon in July in a time of 44:58.
Last year the veteran runner, Sampie Morapedi, breezed through the Brandkop course in 42 minutes to win the overall men’s race.
The 5km and 10km races have attracted some of the better known names in Free State sport and at Glen Lyon, the VKB Knights fast bowler, Dillion du Preez, and former Currie Cup winning Cheetahs centre, Hendrik Meyer, also made an appearance.
The Brandkop leg will once again offer 5- and 10km races and entries cost R50 and R80, plus a R10 conservancy fee.
The trail run on Saturday morning 6 August 2016 begins at 8:00. – MORGAN PIEK
