Brandfort farmer injured with grass cutter during attack

The farmer involved in an attack on his farm Palmietfontein on Monday morning near Brandfort in the Free State sustained moderate injuries after he was attacked by five suspects.
Provincial Hawks spokesperson, S’fiso Nyakane, says Carl Gutter was treated for injuries on his hand and back after he was attacked with a grass cutter.

Gutter was about to drive from his farm at about 07:00 when a man knocked on the window of his bakkie. The suspect pointed a fire arm at Gutter who managed to escape through the bakkie’s passenger door.

A struggle ensued and one of the suspects fired shots at Gutter. He returned fire and injured one of the men in the back.

The injured attacker later died in an ambulance on the way to a hospital. Nyakane says the police’s murder investigation continues.

Gutter has not been arrested as the investigation continues. He says statements from Gutter and his wife still need to be taken after which the Public Prosecutor will decide if Gutter will be prosecuted for murder.

The four men who were arrested in a veld near the farm shortly after the incident, will appear in the local Magistrates’ Court today on charges of attempted murder and attempted robbery with a firearm.

Police have not yet found the firearm used by Gutter’s alleged attackers. Nyakane says nothing was stolen.
