The Mangaung Metro Municipality’s technical team for sewerage maintenance attended to a complaint from the Phahameng community about a blocked manhole. Their discovery was shocking.
As the team arrived and investigated the reasons why the manhole was blocked, the team discovered a heavy object covered by a black plastic bag.
“Further inspections of the manhole led to the team discovering that the heavy object was a [deceased] human being. The team immediately contacted the South African Police Service (SAPS) who took control of the scene to retrieve the body,” said MMM spokesperson, Qondile Khedama.
Khedama further confirmed that the matter is now with SAPS and urged the community to be alert and observe any strange activities.
Captain Loraine Earle from SAPS also further confirmed that upon arrival, investigators secured the area and conducted a thorough search. “At this stage, the identity of the deceased is yet to be determined and members are working around the clock to establish both the identity and the cause of death. The investigations continue,” Earle concluded.
