A fisherman found the body of a missing 31-year-old male floating in the Riet River at around 17:00 yesterday. The deceased, who was reported missing the same day (9 February 2021), was allegedly trying to cross the river with two of his colleagues on 31 January 2021.
According to police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, the two colleagues realised that the current of the river was too heavy after recent rains and abandoned their mission whereupon they then returned home. “The deceased was never seen again. His family became suspicious when they could not reach him on the phone,” said Makhele.
Makhele has urged community members to be vigilant around ditches, dams and rivers, especially after heavy rains.
