Bloemfonteiners plan to reach the top of Africa

Ten hope-inspired Bloemfontein citizens, one with an artificial leg, are planning not only putting Bloemfontein on the map but also to get on top of Mount Kilimanjaro. The team called “Teamhope Kili” will start their journey on the 17th of July in reaching the peak of the world’s highest free-standing mountain and the highest mountain in Africa.

This project forms part of the Cell C and ZPC Hospitality Renovation Specialists initiative. They will sponsor the Kilimanjaro project which aims to raise funds and to carry messages of hope and peace for South Africa.

The first stretch of the expedition is to fly from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg to Tanzania. Then they will start the adventure. It will take them nine days to climb and descend the mountain. They hope to reach the peak on the 6th day.

The group’s mission is to raise a minimum of R150 000 for the Association for the Physically Disabled and the Shiloh Zoe Hope Foundation, which works towards rescuing and caring for babies dumped in trash cans, dumping sited or any other place.

Amongst the ten mountaineers are physically disabled Godfrey Lobengu and sixteen year old Ruben Pretorius from Sentraal Secondary School.

As July is regarded as Mandela month, “the Mandela Foundation is busy registering the event on their website as one of the official events to take place on Mandela Day.” On the 18th of July otherwise known as Mandela Day, the team will be transferring to Machame gate and hike to Machame camp.
