The Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation (DSACR) is set to advance its mission of fostering a thriving arts and culture scene in the province through the Free State Homebrew Festival, taking place across the city between 20 and 23 February.
Previously a precursor to the Mangaung African Cultural Festival (MACUFE), the Homebrew Festival is an event featuring theatre, dance, music, literature, poetry, visual arts, photography, and crafts. It offers a platform for local artists from across the province to showcase their talents and generate income.
“As per the commitment in our maiden Budget Vote Speech in the seventh administration, we are on course to ensure that we continuously and consistently implement programmes that fosters social cohesion and nation-building, while also advancing artist development and participation,” said the Free State MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Ntombizanele Sifuba.
The festival creates economic opportunities for a wide range of arts practitioners, including crafters, technical service providers, stage managers, production and promotion teams, exhibitors, and small businesses (SMMEs). By supporting both artistic expression and local enterprise, the event aims to enrich the cultural landscape of the Free State.
“Through these programmes, we are also on a quest to contribute towards government priorities of economic development and cultural tourism while also celebrating our heritage, culture, and traditions,” stated MEC Sifuba.
