Firefighters have managed to contain a raging veld fire and extinguish it in the northern suburbs of Bloemfontein today. The fire, which occurred in a veld close to Normandie Avenue – an area in close proximity to residential homes, was exacerbated by the hot, dry and windy season. No-one was hurt in the fire, nor were any of the homes adversely affected by the fire which was allegedly started by a homeless individual and later spread throughout the vicinity.
This comes after Deputy Director of Forest and Veld Fire Oversight for the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in the Free State, Malcolm Procter, spoke to OFM News last month about the prevalence of forest fires in the province. He urged community members to be vigilant and cognisant of wind conditions, as well as the South African Weather Service’s daily Fire Danger Index (FDI).
