Bloemfontein cancer patients invited to free skincare treatments during awareness month

Cancer patients in Bloemfontein will have the opportunity to receive free oncology-safe skincare treatments during October, in recognition of National Cancer Awareness Month.

The initiative, a partnership between the Longevity Centre by RXME and iS Clinical, aims to raise awareness about the importance of safe skincare for patients undergoing cancer treatment.

Dr Kobus Erasmus, Head of Aesthetics at the Longevity Centre, says cancer therapies can have a severe impact on the skin. “Cancer treatments often leave the skin feeling dry, itchy, and sensitive to most personal care products. Radiation, in particular, can cause peeling, blistering, or lasting changes in skin tone. As a result, even everyday things like scented creams, hot showers, or tight clothes may suddenly cause pain or irritation. That’s why oncology-aware care is so important.”

Qualified therapists at the centre will provide complimentary oncology-safe treatments, including the Harmony Facial, which is specifically designed for skin affected by cancer therapies.

Patients will also receive the iS Clinical Pure Wellness Collection — a home-care kit formulated to cleanse, hydrate, and protect sensitive skin between treatments. Therapists will share practical skincare advice to help patients manage side effects safely and comfortably.

Elle van Rensburg, Product Specialist at Stern Laser by iS Clinical, says the initiative is about compassion and support. “In a journey that already asks so much, this partnership is our way of showing up for patients and their families. The iS Cancer Care programme brings gentle, oncology-safe treatments into the healing space, helping patients through a difficult time while giving them products they can use at home to feel more comfortable and supported.”

Dr Erasmus also shared seven essential skincare tips for those undergoing cancer treatment:

  • Use fragrance-free products.
  • Moisturise frequently with gentle, hydrating balms.
  • Choose mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
  • Avoid strong actives such as retinoids or potent vitamin C.
  • Skip exfoliation to allow natural healing.
  • Cleanse with mild, non-foaming products.
  • Always follow medical advice from trained oncology professionals.

“Before starting facials, peels, or laser treatments, consult a medical professional trained in oncology care to ensure your safety,” adds Dr Erasmus.

A public information event will take place on 14 October at the Longevity Centre, 4 Brebner Street, where attendees can learn more about oncology-safe skincare and treatment options.

Cancer patients who wish to book their free treatment are encouraged to do so in advance, as spaces are limited. Bookings can be made with Tiffany Pienaar on 083 632 3961.
