Bloem student uninjured after daring hijack escape

SABRINA DEAN – A Bloemfontein student who was hijacked in Universitas last night was lucky to escape unscathed after the suspects were unsuccessful in trying to lock her in the boot of her vehicle.

Parkweg Police spokesperson Chaka Marope says three unknown suspects, one of them armed, approached the vehicle in the driveway around 9pm. He says they forced the 22-year-old woman out of the car and into the boot.

"Luckily they did not lock the boot properly. While they were waiting another vehicle approached them and while the suspects wer speaking to other suspects she managed to escape from the boot of the car and run into the house," he says.

Authorities were alerted and the vehicle’s tracking unit activated. The Tactical Response Team at Ladybrand responded and managed to recover the vehicle near Ladybrand. A 26-year-old Lesotho national was arrested and is expected to appear in court soon.

Police are still searching for the other two suspects.

Marope says the victim, who is believed to be a student at the University of the Free State, was fortunate to escape without any injuries but has been left severely traumatized.
