Although Free State Premier, Sisi Ntombela, recommended earlier that Bloemfontein remain at Level 4 as it is the provincial epicentre of the Covid-19 pandemic, the final decision and pronouncement will be done by the National Command Council.
This is according to Free State Department of Health spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi. Following a briefing by Ntombela earlier today, Mvambi expressed that the Premier’s recommendation is supported by MEC for Health, Montseng Tsiu.
Ntombela’s recommendation caused quite a stir among residents of Bloemfontein, who today took to social media to express their anger and frustration with the Premier’s decision that the City of Roses should remain on Level 4.
“Based on scientific data that indicates that most of the new infections are coming from Bloemfontein, it is the expressed wish of both the MEC for Health and the Premier of the Free State that the city remains at Level 4,” Mvambi said.
“However, the final decision and pronouncement will be done by the National Command Council,” he added.
Should the Covid-19 National Command Council apply the recommendation, Bloemfontein could possibly be the only area in the Free State to remain at Level 4 while the rest of the province moves to Level 3.
This comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa explained that most of the country will progess to the next lockdown level while epicentres of Covid-19 will remain at the current level.
