Bfn hijack victim thankful to be alive

A brave Bloemfontein student who was hijacked by three suspects this week is still traumatized but thankful that she managed to escape physically unscathed after the suspects tried to lock her in the boot of her vehicle. Final year education student at the University of the Free State, Romy Jade Wasserman, says she was visiting a friend in Universitas just after 20:00 last night when two men pulled her from her vehicle in the driveway while waiting for the gate to open.

They pushed her into the boot. One of the two men was armed. A third suspect later joined them.

Authorities were alerted shortly after the hijacking and the vehicle’s tracking unit was activated. The Tactical Response Team at Ladybrand responded and managed to recover the vehicle near the town.

A 26-year-old Lesotho national was arrested. He is expected to appear in court soon. The other two suspects are still on the run. This was the second hijacking in one day outside Bloemfontein after a 72-year-old man and his assistant travelling in a cigarette delivery vehicle were hijacked by three men off the N1 highway yesterday evening.
