Bethlehem cop awarded as best in the country

Duane Petrus – A Free State detective has been recognised as the best investigator in the country, dealing with violent crimes such as rapes as well as crimes committed against children.

In the last financial year, Rene Nel, who is based in Bethlehem, managed to secure a total of 286 sentences, including 13 life sentences. Ten of those sentences were handed down to serial rapists.

She has been with the Bethlehem Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit since 2010.

An elated Nel says the emotions involved in her investigations, is one of the factors that motivates her to work hard.
“The biggest thing is when you can tell the victim or the complainant, and you look into their eyes and can see the gratitude in their eyes. I cry. I cry with them. I cry like a baby in court when I sit next to the victim and we had a good conviction. Because it is all worth it at the end of the day when I get a good conviction, Nel says.

The province’s provincial commissioner, Simon Mpembe, applauded Nel for the quality of work she delivered

“This is an indication that we are having cops that are committed, very dedicated to serve the community. That is why we are hopeful that the police will continue to improve on the professional services that they are supposed to render to the communities to the Free State and the entire republic ,” Mpembe says.
