Cleaning and tiding up loved ones graves was the main objective of a clean-up project held at the Bainsvlei Cemetery on Youth Day.

With the aid of the Bainsvlei Neighborhood Association and residents of the area, the DA successfully cleared up 20% of the Cemetery in just one day.

According to DA Ward Councillor David McKay, it is important that these areas are serene, especially as family members come to pay their respects to their loved ones and want to do so in a clean and relaxed environment.

“This is impossible if you have to fight through a jungle of blackjacks, weeds and bushes to find the gravesite,” he said.

McKay also said that they have requested that the municipality step-up and assist in completing the task. “We estimate it should take a team of 10 municipal workers and roughly five days to have the area spick and span.”

He further said that at least 90% of the Bainsvlei community have a loved one, friend or acquaintance who has been laid to rest at the cemetery and therefore the attendance of the event was important.  “I personally want to thank each and every individual that supported this event.”
