The first day back at school can be so exciting but also very overwhelming, especially for the little ones starting this new, big journey.
Parenting coach, Ansa Lange, gave some insightful tips as to how to manage anxiety of the first day at “big school”.
Lange advises that it is important to make some time for open communication of any concerns or anxieties that your child may have.
“Acknowledge that the first couple of days at school can be overwhelming. Validate your child’s emotions instead of trying to convince him/her that there is nothing to be afraid of.”
When discussing the upcoming routine changes, make sure to discuss it in a positive manner. It brings about a sense of inclusivity and helps with decision-making by asking for your child’s input as well.
Unfortunately some children are really not too eager about school and are often scared to start school. Lange advises that offering reassurance and highlighting the positive aspects of the upcoming school year can be motivating and uplifting for your little one.
“All your child needs is to be heard, for you to put down your phone and make eye contact with them. Ask them what kind of support they need from you.”
Keeping a healthy balance between school and home life can be challenging for both the parent and the child. That is why limiting screen time and allowing downtime for relaxation and play ensures a good balance between academic and recreational activities.
She further adds focusing on having a collaborative relationship with teachers is really important as this will help you stay informed about your child’s progress.
“Children feel empowered when they are allowed to figure things out for themselves. They learn to believe in themselves and their abilities to navigate challenges.”
