The Department of Economic, Small Business Development and Environmental Affairs (Destea) has urged members of the public to be cautious after a baboon has been spotted in the northern suburbs of Bloemfontein.
According to Destea it is suspected that the baboon has been on the run since November 2020. The department first became of aware of it on 24 February, after it was suspected that the baboon was kept as an illegal pet.
According to Kgotso Tau from the department their law enforcement team is currently monitoring the situation and efforts are being made to immobilize the stray baboon. “The challenge experienced is that it is difficult to locate the baboon as it is moving fast between houses,” said Tau.
The department together with relevant parties, including the Health Department of the Mangaung Metro Municipality and the Bloemfontein Zoo, are on board to catch the baboon and to put it in a place of safety.
“Destea pleads with people of Mangaung to immediately inform the relevant authorities should they see the baboon and to exercise caution as the animal might harm them. People can call Dr Pierre Nel on 083 281 8365.” concluded Tau.
