Baritones, sopranos and altos alike can flex their vocal chords and try out for the Free State Provincial Mass Choir. Singers from across the province have been invited to audition during August and September for the musical group.
This is an initiative by the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (DSACR) to encourage more participation in and enjoyment of choral music. Auditions will begin at the Civic Theatre in Bloemfontein later this month before continuing in Welkom, Sasolburg and Qwaqwa.
According to MEC Limakatso Mahasa, choral music plays a part in improving society by developing unity and culture. “We value choral music because of its stature in society and the role it can play in nation building, social cohesion and the preservation of our heritage. This art form can play an important role to promote moral regeneration and can be a vehicle through which we drive our message of patriotism in the province,” she said.
“It is important to encourage young people to cherish and take part in choral music. Choirs play a vital role in disseminating messages of unity and national pride,” expressed Mahasa.
