Areas in Mangaung to be renamed

Sixteen residential areas in Manguang Metropolitan Municipality will be renamed, with Botshabelo making out the bulk of these areas.
This is according to provincial MEC for Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation (SACR), Mathabo Leeto, at the tabling of her 2017/2018 Budget Vote Speech on Monday at the Legislature in Bloemfontein.
Leeto said, through the Provincial Geographical Names Committee, they have assisted municipalities to change the 16 residential areas in Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu during the 2016/17 financial year.
“The names of sections in Botshabelo that used to be known according to the alphabet, have been changed. Members of the public were engaged through a mass dialogue in October 2015, where names were suggested by attendees.”
Other areas that held public participation meetings included Thaba Nchu as well as Bloemfontein. Namibia, a residential area in Bloemfontein, is also part of the renaming process.
“Transformation of our heritage landscape also relates to the Geographical Names Changes process. The Department embarks on a geographical naming and renaming process to ensure that our heritage landscape is transformed.”
Leeto also said her department will accelerate the naming and renaming of streets, towns and public buildings. An amount of R1 million was transferred to the Provincial Geographical Names Committee to deliver on this mandate.
Furthermore, SACR will collaborate with the Department of Cooperative Governance, Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements as well as municipalities in this process.
