Applications for the 900 free driver’s licences for unemployed matriculants, for the road safety improvement programme , closed today. Briefing sessions were held by the Free State department of Police, Roads and Transport around the province in pilot districts. According to the Acting Chief Director of traffic management, Nako Ramotsoto, the process went well and was well received.
"The briefing sessions have gone through well. Starting from Thabo Mofutsanyana, Fezile Dabi and completing in Motheo. Learners were briefed about the process, unemployed matriculant youth. We are going to teach them how to drive so that they can be able to get driver’s licences. Remember that most of the jobs currently they need people with driver’s licences," said Ramotsoto.
Ramotsoto added that most people cannot afford to pay driving schools in order to be taught how to drive and the initiative was developed to fill that gap. The applications will be processed from next week and successful applicants will be informed on which districts and testing stations they will be trained.
