The Free State Health Department has expressed its shock over the stolen hospital equipment worth about R450 000, which was seized at a scrap metal business in Bloemfontein this morning. Health spokesperson, Thebogo Oepeng, says an internal investigation will also be launched after two suspects employed at the Pelonomi Hospital were arrested today. One of the suspects was arrested at his home while the other was arrested during the raid. They allegedly sold stolen equipment, including X-ray machines, and office and cleaning equipment to the local scrap metal business. Pelonomi has been making headlines over poor service delivery due to a lack of consumables and a backlog on maintenance of medical equipment. Oepeng says there might be a syndicate at work.
A third government official, employed at Pelonomi, was admitted as a patient today after he allegedly suffered a heart attack when police turned up at his workplace. Police are searching for a fourth suspect in connection with the incident.
