On Saturday South Africa and the world will know who the 2013 ICC Cricketer of the Year will be when the winners of the various ICC awards will be announced in a live TV show.
Hashim Amla of the Proteas and current South Africa’s Cricket of the Year has been nominated for the ICC’s supreme award – the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for the Cricketer of the Year – as well as for the Test Cricketer of the Year award. Dale Steyn has been nominated in this latter category as well while Dane van Niekerk, a member of the Momentum National Women’s Team, has been short-listed for the women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year and Marais Erasmus for ICC Umpire of the Year.
Amla, Steyn, AB de Villiers and Vernon Philander have all been selected for the ICC World Test XI of the Year and Amla and De Villiers for the ICC World ODI XI for the year.
The judging period runs from August 7, 2012, to August 25, 2013. Therefore Amla and Steyn’s lastest performance in die ODI series against India, the world’s number one ODI team, won’t be taken in consideration.
Amla will come up against cricketers of note. Also nominated for the supreme award are: James Anderson (Eng), Michael Clarke (Aus), Alastair Cook (Eng), MS Dhoni (Ind) and Kumar Sangakkara (SL). – CSA
