Alleged robbers wanted after allegedly stabbing and robbing taxi driver


Police in Welkom are investigating case of robbery after a taxi driver was robbed of cash and stabbed with a knife. These alleged bogus passengers are still at large.

According to police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, on the 20 May 2019 at about 22:40 a 32-year-old taxi driver with a blue Toyota Corolla with registration number BWV 345 FS picked up two males near a ladies’ hostel and another two near C hostel, both in Thabong, who wanted to be transported to Mannys. He drove to Mannys where two passengers got off and the remaining two wanted to be transported to Diesel Electric in Jan Hofmyer Street in the Industrial site of Welkom.

“On arrival at the above-mentioned spot, the passenger sitting behind the driver’s seat demanded money, pulled out a knife and stabbed him in his right cheek and mouth. While the taxi driver was focusing on the passenger at the back, the second passenger sitting in the front seat also pulled out a knife and stabbed him in his the elbow of his right arm. The driver took out a sharp object and hit one of the suspects with it. The other one took the keys and ash tray containing R100 and both suspects fled on foot.  A case of robbery was registered for further investigation,” said Thakeng.

Police have urged taxi drivers operating during the night time to be careful while operating their business to curb robberies.
