The SA Human Rights Commission spokesperson Isaac Mangena, today confirmed that they will investigate allegations of racism at Wilgehof Primary School in Bloemfontein, after complaints that some of the kids were referred to in a racially abusive manner.
The old South African flag and a picture of expelled ANC Youth League president Julius Malema alongside that of a monkey were also reportedly put up on a classroom wall.
The parent who reported the incident, Craig Thiem, says it’s unacceptable that after almost 20 years of democracy, racism still exists in South Africa. He feels that kids should be taught to respect different people’s cultures.
The school could not be reached for comment and the Department of Education said earlier today, they’ve asked the headmaster of Wilgehof Primary to write a report, after which a decision will be taken as to the way forward. OFM News is also waiting for comment for the education department.
