Thulasizwe Mbambo and Phumlani Madlala appeared before the Welkom Magistrate’s court today on charges of fraud and intimidation. The pair were arrested on Tuesday by the Hawks’ Commercial Crime Investigating Unit.
According to Hawks’ spokesperson, Captain S’fiso Nyakane, the two suspects, both aged 35 years old, were arrested after they had received a complaint from a local car dealership in Welkom about a fraudulent vehicle finance application for two Toyota Fortuners in the region of about R2.2 million.
The suspects were caught when they were set to deliver the vehicles from the dealership. Six cell phones, false identity documents and temporary drivers’ licences used in the finance application were also seized.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the pair might be linked to syndicates that are operating in the Free State and Free State.
Their case has been postponed to 5 September 2018 for formal bail application, and they have been remanded in custody. – Seithati Semenokane
