Alleged dagga dealer arrested during routine patrols


Police conducting patrols on the ZR Mahabane Road in Theunissen, arrested a man who was found transporting dagga on Friday 15 November 2019 at around 23:00.

Police state that as members of the Crime Prevention Unit were approaching Winburg junction (R708) from direction of Welkom, they came across a suspicious silver Toyota Corolla with a Lesotho registration number and two occupants inside.

The police immediately followed the vehicle in an attempt to stop it but the vehicle made a U-turn, speeding back into the direction of the Winburg road. A high speed chase ensued until the vehicle drove onto a farm road at S439. Both the driver and the passenger fled on foot and the police managed to apprehend one suspect.

Police searched the vehicle and found nine bags of dagga in the back seat and inside the boot.

The total weight of dagga recovered is 236.88 kg with the estimated street value of R532 980. The dagga and the motor vehicle were confiscated by the police.

A case of dealing in dagga was registered and it was found the suspect had a similar pending case in Kroonstad. The suspect (55) is expected to at Theunissen Magistrate’s Court.
