The Cansa Free2BMe programme has become a beacon of invaluable support and empowerment for local adolescents and young adults (AYAs) who need support as they navigate the challenges in their cancer journey.
This is according to Anina Meiring, Cansa TLC manager who manages the Cansa TLC programme nationally.
She told the publication that by helping younger patients through an age-appropriate programme that addresses their needs on various subjects, adolescents and young adults will be able to understand, adjust and hopefully ease the emotional burden of living and coping when diagnosed with cancer.
“Cansa Free2Bme provides understandable medical information, emotional support methods, and practical advice to try and establish resilience for a cancer diagnosis and to assist in the demands and disruptions of their illness,” she explained.
Since it was rolled out last year, the programme has since provided a lifeline for those who have reached out for assistance as adolescents and young adults with cancer are known to have complex medical and psychosocial needs throughout treatment.
“AYAs face concerns like adherence to treatment, fertility, friendships, isolation, and long-term side effects. They might worry about financial implications, issues with school or work, and other adjustments within this new world, to name but a few,” added Meiring.
Prioritising open communication does go a long way as it creates a safe space for your child to express their fears, concerns, and emotions without judgment.
“Children may fear that their illness will cause their loved ones to abandon or neglect them, fear losing their ability to participate in activities they enjoy, and fear being treated differently by friends when losing their hair or having an amputation. They may fear pain, discomfort, the unknown aspects of medical procedures, and even death,” expressed Meiring.
Her advice to parents and guardians is to prioritise open communication to create a safe space for them to express their fears, concerns, and emotions without judgment.
“Above all, convey unconditional love and support, reminding them that they’re not alone in this journey and that someone will be there every step of the way, no matter what challenges may arise.”
