Afternoon concerts in Old Presidency

The Baroque Ensemble will be the first in a series of Sunday afternoon concerts as a project of the Bloemfontein City Orchestra in 2015. This concert will take place on Sunday, 1 February 2015, at 16:00 in the Old Presidency.

The tenor, Lance Phillip, will be the guest artist for the occasion. He will present vocal solo works from the Baroque era. The first work will be an aria from the Cantata Ich ruf zu dir of JS Bach, for tenor, oboe, cello and continuo. The music beautifully portrays Bach’s lyrical vocal works. It will be followed by an Italian song by Monteverdi from the early Baroque: Exulta filia Sion.

Two Italian instrumental works are included: A suite for two recorders and continuo by Bononcini and a cello sonata of Vivaldi. Kobus Malan will be playing oboe and recorder, Petrus Krige will play recorder and the continuo will be played by Cezarre Strydom on the virginal. The cellist is Piet van Rooyen.

The programme will conclude with two complete cantatas: Kantate 2, Schmeckt und sehet for tenor, oboe and continuo, containing two arias, two recitatives and an arioso, written for the first Sunday in the New Year. It contains a plethora of contrasting moods. Kantate 13: Seele, lerne dich erkennen for tenor, recorder and continuo will conclude the programme.
Tickets are R60 per person and will be available at the door.
