Smash Afrika is the name on everybody’s lips after this son of the Bloem soil has been nominated for the DStv Mzanzi Viewers’ Choice Awards’ popular Rising Star award.

This radio personality was born and bred in the City of Roses where his radio career kicked off. In an exclusive interview Smash told Bloemfontein Courant that radio was not always part of his plan. While growing up, he wanted to be an actor.

He explained that his love for radio only began when he was in the studio for the first time, accompanying his friend who had his own show. Smash said he realised right there and then that this is what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. He added that although his father was always supportive, he still wanted his son to study something “serious” and it was only when he was invited to work at YFM in Johannesburg that his dad was completely sold on the radio idea.

“When I walked into Kovsie FM, I told them that in six months’ time I would be working at YFM, and even though it didn’t happen in six months, it still happened. So, when I got to YFM, I knew that my next goal was 5FM.

”I took a complete leap of faith when I moved to Johannesburg. I had no prospects of employment or accommodation, just someone’s word that there might be someone willing to put me on the radio, ” Smash told Bloemfontein Courant.

Smash concluded by saying that he tries to represent Bloemfontein in everything he does and if he wins this award, he will try to put Bloemfontein’s talent on the big stage. – Sazly Hartzenberg
