Crew leader, Portia Motheri, of the Bloemfontein Working on Fire (WoF) team saves the day as she rescues an abandoned baby in Phase 6.

“This situation hurt me as I could tell that the child was hungry and needed to be changed. I love kids dearly and I don’t like to see them in distress hence I tried my utmost best to ensure it was safe until she was taken to a place of safety,” says Motheri.

The mother of three and her team were doing a clean-up when they were approached by a man who alerted her of an infant crying.

According to a statement released by WoF, Moitheri rescued the child and made means to ensure it was taken care of.

“The child was reunited with his mother and father and was left in the safety of the hospital social worker.”

WoF General Manager in the Free State Antoinette Jini commended the bravery of the firefighter saying that she made a difference in the life of the child.

“We strive in making sure that we live according to the values of working on fire, which includes making a difference,” she says.
