80% FS traffic fines rejected by the courts

REFILWE MEKOA

It is estimated that close to 80% of traffic fines are rejected.

This is according to the Free State Police, Roads and Transport Department during a legislature meeting in Bloemfontein this morning. The department’s CFO Joyce Masemola says courts reject the traffic fines that were allegedly not filled in correctly.

She says they need funding to upgrade the traffic fine system. Masemola says according to Section 56, the fines are only limited to the courts and they hope to change it. She says it will be easier for people not to travel to the province to pay their fines if they are from other provinces. This will be done by traffic fines being paid nationwide.

She says they need to send traffic officers to a refresher training course to teach them on how to correctly fill in the fines. Masemola says there were incidents were some of the officers couldn’t read their own writing on the traffic fines that they issued. It is said that there are R4 million unpaid court fines. During the meeting, Masemola says if they don’t get the system right, they will lose a lot of money.
