Education is a liberating tool for women. This was the message from Deputy Minister of police, Maggie Sotyu, to a group of some 500 women who marched up Bloemfontein’s Naval Hill this morning.
Sotyu says education is important for everyone – particularly for girls and women. She says it is undeniable that investing in girls’ education is one of the most effective ways to reduce poverty as it has a ripple effect in families and across generations.
“Education is a great engine of personal development,” says Sotyu.
She says “it is through education that a daughter of a peasant can become a doctor.”
“Education is the number one priority to address all historical imbalances of the past, which include gender equality and staying in school to learn,” explains Sotyu.
The march was in commemoration of Women’s Day which will be celebrated across South Africa tomorrow.
