Embracing the Karate Chop

Sensei Obakeng Mekgwe demonstrating JKA moves to his learners.

Sensei Obakeng Mekgwe has been teaching Thaba Nchu children the art of karate since 2010. He started giving lessons at the Mmabana Cultural Centre, teaching the Japanese Karate Association (JKA) technique to children aged from 10 years and above.
“Any child from the age of 10 years and above is welcome to join us. We welcome boys and girls to the club,” says the Sensei.
He says they often visit schools and do JKA demonstrations. “We do this to show the learners what we can do physically and to show them what our style of karate entails.”
Not only do the children learn the technique of JKA during lessons, but they are also given lessons on the values of karate, which include discipline, self-respect and self-defence.
Sensei Mekgwe says he would also like to start offering adult self-defence lessons to the community of Thaba Nchu as soon as he can get more people interested in joining.
Currently practise takes place every Monday to Friday from 16:00 till 17:30, at St Augustine Primary School, in Unit 1 in Thaba Nchu. If anyone can assist with a venue for training as well as equipment and clothing, please call Sensei Mekgwe at 073 334 9715. – Seithati Semenokane
