30 Arrested for Social Grant Fraud in Free State

Thirty people were arrested for defrauding the State by misusing the Disability Grant yesterday. These individuals allegedly falsified medical information from doctors.

According to a statement, this came to Sassa’s attention when one of the beneficiaries confessed to having paid an undisclosed amount of money to enable her to forge a medical referral of a doctor known to her.

The Botshabelo Local Office Management soon after consulted with the relevant doctors and found that there was indeed some sort of a fraudulent activity. The statement further explains that the matter was immediately referred to Sassa’s Fraud and Compliance Unit and the matter was further investigated.

The 30 beneficiaries that were arrested are only part of the first phase as more will follow, as some officials within Sassa are also linked to this network of fraud.

The Sassa Free State Acting Regional Executive Manager, Mohodi Tsosane said Sassa appeals to the public to come forward and report any fraudulent activities that they are aware of, as Sassa is serious about curbing fraud and the misuse of State funds.

“We will win the fight against fraud and we will continue to improve our systems in order to not only be reactive but to also be a step ahead of criminals who want to feed of the poor,” emphasised Tsosane.

He further said that they urge all South Africans not to be afraid to blow the whistle against these perpetrators. “Let us all be ambassadors of Zero Social Grants Fraud Tolerance. Sassa is commiotted to paying the right Social Grant to the right person at the right time and place,” he concluded.
