A 23-year-old male has been sentenced to 20 years direct imprisonment by the Bloemfontein Regional Court for raping an 80-year-old grandmother at her home in Borwa location near Tweespruit.

The incident occurred on 28 May 2017, when a grandmother was asleep with her two-year-old great grandson whilst her 20-year-old granddaughter was out.  At about 02:00 the accused, Tshepo Innocent Lemaoana, entered the grandmother’s house and threatened her with a knife.

He undressed the elderly woman and raped her whilst her great grandson was asleep. While the accused was still inside the house the granddaughter arrived and knocked at the door. The victim told the accused to go and open the door and granddaughter found the accused with only his underwear and could not explain why he was half naked in the granny`s house and just left.

Realising that the grandmother had been raped, she alerted the police and the accused was traced and apprehended the same day.

The case was assigned to Detective Sergeant Tshepo Olebile of the Ladybrand Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit who managed to link the accused through positive DNA that ensured that the accused was found guilty and sentenced to 20 years direct imprisonment for rape.

“Crimes against women and children are one of the priority crimes and as law enforcement agencies we strive to ensure that the vulnerable are protected by law. It is appalling that people take advantage of the elderly and leave them with permanent emotional scars,” said Free State Police Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Moeketsi Sempe.
