Duane Petrus – 216 cars that have been impounded in the Free State will be compacted and converted into scrap metal by the end of the month.
The Head of the Transport Tracing Unit, Mangaliso Xaba, says this applies to cars impounded between 2000 and 2013.
He added that the value of most of these cars would not add up to what the owners owe, that is why they decided to rather crush than sell the cars.
Xaba says the owners have had ample time to claim their cars, but only a handful had managed to done so.
“We are now embarking on ensuring that when your car is impounded in the province, we will be counting the dates. We will no longer be keeping cars for more than two years in our pounds, because it is costly to the government. We will either sell or crush these vehicles,” Xaba Said.
The cars will be compacted in Bloemfontein, Welkom, Qwaqwa, and Kroonstad on 31 July.
Here are the number of cars in different regions in the province that will be compacted: Bloemfontein (52), Thaba Nchu (2) Ficksburg (2), Bethlehem (2), Welkom (86), Kroonstad (25), Qwaqwa (34) Sasolburg (13).
