Lighting seemingly struck twice on that Montagu course at Fancourt in George yesterday, as George Coetzee sunk birdie, birdie and eagle to edge Bloemfontein’s Dean Burmester by one stroke at the Dimension Data Pro-Am.

Coetzee finished his final three holes during the third round on the course in exactly the same fashion as on Saturday.

Burmester and Darren Fichardt were in a two-horse race for the title, but the late surge by Coetzee saw the player claiming his first title since last year’s tri-sanctioned Mauritius Open.

England’s Ross McGowan, Germany’s Alexander Knappe and Fichardt all finished two strokes behind Burmester on 18 under par to share third.

Coetzee said that he didn’t think he would be able to repeat Saturday afternoon’s rally.

“At stages it didn’t look like it was going to happen for me, but I’m happy to have kept calm, put myself in play and then hit the shot on the last hole that was needed,” said Coetzee.

“I was behind the whole day until the 17th.”

“I was just on the fringe on 17. I just had a sense that it had a good chance of going in. So I just did my homework, read the line properly.

“Luckily for me, it went in. I actually holed it from off the green yesterday as well – so everything was pretty similar.

“I just kept thinking it was possible and I just had to get out of my own way and let it happen.”

It is expected that Burmester will be named the Sunshine Tour’s Player of the Year for 2015 this week after being nominated alongside Jacques Blaauw and Wallie Coetzee.

The tour now heads to the 2016 Eye of Africa PGA Championship in the South of Johannesburg.
