17-year-old murder accused may be tried separately

GALOOME SHOPANE The 17-year-old suspected alongside two other men for the murder of retired Professor Daniel Wybenga will be trialed separately.

Police spokesperson Majang Skalkie says they are still waiting for the public prosecutor’s decision on the matter regarding his prosecution.

The teenager was arrested during the weekend in Clarens, and later released to his parents’ custody.

“Because he is a minor, we are waiting for the Public Prosecutor to tell us whether we will prosecute and on which charge.

And then from there we will let you know when he will appear in court, but it will be in a private court because he is a minor,” explains Skalkie.

Thabiso Makoetje and Simon Dlamini who also stand accused of killing 69-year-old Wybenga on October 7th will appear in the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court again on Thursday on charges of house robbery, murder and theft of motor vehicle.

They are still in police custody.
