Duane Petrus – A total of 17 heavily armed suspects were allegedly involved in a deadly cash in transit robbery that was foiled by the Hawks on the Hennenman road earlier today.
Hawks spokesperson, Paul Ramoloko, says five robbers were shot dead, six wounded and six more are in custody after a shootout with police took place.
Er24 also confirmed that a civilian, who was sitting in a truck, was struck by a bullet and had to be airlifted to hospital in a critical condition.
Ramoloko says some suspects tried to flee the scene, but were apprehended not far from where the shootout took place.
“We confiscated 11 firearms, including one AK-47 and one R5 rifle. We also managed to confiscate five vehicles, including a BMW X5, a Mercedes Benz AMG 63, a Toyota bakkie and other luxury vehicles. The investigation continues,” Ramoloko said.
He added that no money was stolen during the crime. No police officials were injured.
